This week’s Five Quick Things is offered to all subscribers in honor of all the mothers — and those who mother — in our lives. I hope you enjoy!
Mother’s Day can be complicated. What is meant to be a day to celebrate those who have given us life often brings with it feelings of grief, anger, and despair.
No matter our relationship with our mothers, we all have people in our life who have mothered us through the years. Whether or not we have given birth, we have all had times in our lives when we’ve mentored and mothered others.
This year on Mother’s Day, I invite you to celebrate those people in your life. And if Mother’s Day is one of those days you’d rather just forget existed, that’s okay too. Wherever you find yourself this week, I pray you are surrounded with people you love.
Here are five motherly-themed things for you to peruse this week.
One Book of Devotions for the New Mama on the Block
I just bought a couple extra copies of The Beauty of Motherhood for my neighbors who are celebrating their first Mother’s Day this year. New parenthood can be lonely, and I love how this book offers solidarity in knowing that you, new mama, are never alone in your struggles.
One Book of Poetry for the Mama Creatives in Your Life
I have come back to The Long Devotion: Poets Writing Motherhood over and over again this year. Lately, balancing the creative life with homeschooling and parenting has felt impossible. The poems and essays in this book remind me that writing is more than a hobby. Like exercise, creating is vital to my health and wellbeing.
One Song To Make Mom Cry (in the very best way)
I cry every single time I hear this song. It reminds me of moments when my own mom mothered me, and I inevitably think about my relationship with my daughters too. It’s one of Taylor’s sweetest songs, and one of my very favorites.
One Journal Prompt For the Week
Pick up that pen and get writing!
What mother figure do you look up to? What is it about that person that you respect? How has that person made an impact in your life? If you are a mother, how has that person contributed to your own mothering style?
One Recipe to Share With Those You Love
This Spinach and Cheese Strata is one of my go-to brunch recipes. We’ve also eaten it for dinner with a side of bacon. I’m hoping I can convince my kids to make it for me this weekend!
May your heart be filled with joy and sunshine in the week ahead!
Until next time,
