I miss the days of old-fashioned letters. When I was eight or nine, my grandfather moved to California, from my childhood home in Georgia. This was in the late 1980’s, so well before the days of e-mail or the internet. Heck, I don’t even know if computers existed when I was eight or nine, but I know we didn’t have one. Every month, I’d write my Grandpa a letter, lick the envelope to seal it, and put a stamp on the outside. I was always so excited to walk down the driveway to put it in the mailbox, careful to raise the flag so the mailman knew it was there.

And oh! When I got home from school to see the flag down, I felt like magic was on its way. I knew my letter was on its way to its final destination—and I couldn’t wait to hear back from my beloved pen pal. It would take several weeks, but my Grandpa would always write back. I’m so sad I didn’t keep those letters, now that I’m an adult and he’s only in my memory. They would be near antique by now.

Although I can’t send you handwritten letters every month, I do hope this monthly newsletter will bring the same amount of joy and excitement that my Grandpa’s letters brought to me. I work hard to compile all my favorite things—articles, recipes, links to read, and sometimes even a playlist—a variety of goodies to keep your soul munching for a few weeks.
