Sometime in late spring, I sat down next to my bookshelf and made my summer reading list. It was ambitious. Usually my summer reading list is filled with frilly, fast-paced rom-coms or the latest thrillers, but this year I was craving more literary fiction, more nonfiction, more classics. I ended up not reading much of what was on my planned list. As we begin to wind down the lazy days of summer, I thought it’d be fun to take a look at what I actually DID read the last several months.
Do you know about The StoryGraph? It is my new favorite way to keep up with what I’m reading. Just look at these monthly wrap-ups!
June started out strong with a biography of Harriet Tubman and My Name is Asher Lev, but by the middle of the month, I returned stacks of unread books to the library and found myself reaching for comfort reads instead of challenging ones.
July found me reading a lot of Kid Lit, as well as some nonfiction on balancing the mental load of motherhood and the history of butts. Once A Queen was hands down the best book I read in July.
August isn’t done yet, but I’m happy to say I think I’ve got my reading groove back. The rest of this month I’m digging into The Red Tent and The Secret World of Weather for book clubs.
What has your summer reading looked like this year? What books should I add to my stack?
I loved Covenant of Water - I adore an epic story like that one. This summer, I also read Miranda July's All Fours - it rocked me so hard that I could barely get through anything else - its themes (not necessarily the graphic specifics of the story!) keep popping up for me over and over - must be middle-age. I also read The Paris Novel by Ruth Reichl (love her) - which was lovely. I have Demon Copperhead waiting patiently for me - once the kids are back in school, I think I'll dive in.
The red tent is one of my all time favs!!
